Summer in North America 2018 Part 11 - First Days in BC

We left Winnipeg in the evening and arrived in British Columbia after a 3-hour flight. BC is two time zones behind though, so it was actually a decent time to arrive. We've never called this Canadian province our home, but somehow it's always a wonderful feeling as soon as I walked out their airport doors. It was almost sunset (around 9 pm) and the almost full moon greeted us together with the snow-capped mountain. We called my sister to come and get us and enjoyed the breeze  and the view while waiting for her to arrive.

Can you see the moon and the mountain?

From the airport, we stopped at a HK Style restaurant called Silver Tower for a quick meal.

My sister and her family has moved residence since our last visit, so the drive from the airport was a new sight for us. This kind of view is not uncommon there...

The moon

We arrived in their new home and had some time to catch up, but soon after we settled in for the evening. School was still on afterall...

When we woke up the next morning, Miss Kiki already left with my sister to take her cousin to school. They got DH and I each a cup of latte from Stir Coffee. Coffee verdict: it was okay.

We got ready and headed out to Richmond. Our first destination was a hotpot restaurant called Boiling Point. They serve personal pots for the customers so everyone can choose whichever flavours they prefer. We ordered the Miso pot, Beef pot, and the Thai pot. All three were pretty good. During lunch hours, they offer set menus that include a drink.

After brunch, we went and picked up our rental car. We separated from my sister after this as she had to go pick up her daughter from school. Miss Kiki decided to go tag along to school. DH and I went to our favourite store..... Costco! If you've never been to Costco and you have the chance to, please go check it out! It is a member-only warehouse style bulk shop with high quality products at good prices. You can get anything from furniture to office supplies, medicine to meat. It is usually massive and if you go to one of their American locations, the sizes are even larger!

From Costco we went to Walmart. Check out this escalator that can take your shopping cart up beside you!

This machine was found at the Walmart entrance from the parkade. It's Canada's version of vending machine restaurant. You order your meal here, pay with card, and go to Mc. Donald's to pick your order up.

Cool exit sign. The 'E' on the sign is the character for exit.
For dinner, we met up with my sister, the kids, as well as my brother in law. It was the complete gang and we had Taiwanese style food. The restaurant's specialty was pig trotters.

At home that evening we tried some (I think locally brewed) IPAs.

The next morning, after my sister dropped off her daughter to school we met up with her at Stir Cafe and got some coffee to go. In front of the cafe there was a book borrowing and lending box free for all to use. Take some, leave some. This is a great idea, but I sadly doubt that something like this would work in Jakarta.

We dropped off our rental car at my niece's school and then my sister drove us to Point Roberts. This area has a very interesting situation. It is part of Washington State, USA, but its only border on land is with Canada. Driving from Point Roberts, one has to cross border twice to go to other parts of the USA. Check out the map below...

There aren't many things you can do in Point Roberts, they have a marina and a few gas stations that Canadians love to fill their tanks at due to the much lower prices. So we gassed up and I also got a I-94 slip at the border. This was very useful for my trip to Seattle after that so I wouldn't have to get it at the extremely busy border.

We came back to Ladner just in time to pick my niece up from school, and we went to a small cafe in Ladner called Localz Urban Cafe. It was a small cafe that served a selection of wraps and sandwiches. All of the food we tried was very yummy.

After lunch DH and I walked round the small town of Ladner for a little while. There was a municipal hall with a clock right at the front, a few restaurants, some shops, and a few small buildings. There weren't a lot of people bustling around, but most of them were very friendly.

That was our first day and a half in BC. Please stay tuned for the following posts!

Nintendo Switch Sleeve Tutorial

Hi! I'm Kirana from woofkiki.blogspot.co.id . I am going to write an introduction for this blog post. We bought a Nintendo Switch in Japan.  I really liked it and played with it almost everyday. If you're wondering what a Nintendo Switch is, it is a video game where you can basically  "switch" everything. The joy-cons and even the game! You can also connect it to your TV. It would be nice to bring it around with you, but when you put it in your bag... Oh no! The screen scratched! So, this is a sleeve that will fix that. Let's get started!😊 Kirana Now the tutorial (by Kirana's mom)... 1. Make your pattern according to the picture below. It is basically a 6"x24" rectangle with a semi circle at one end. Note: this is not a printable pattern 1. Cut your outer fabric, lining, and batting(optional). In this tutorial, I used minky for lining and a pre-quilted fabric for the cover, so I didn't need extra batting. For batting, I recomm...

Spring in Egypt Part 9 - Luxor Temple

At the time when we arrived at Luxor temple it was already after dusk and it became a little difficult to take photos. I compensated by setting my camera ISO to 4000 to make tripod-less picture-taking possible even though the grains became more visible. Just like the previous nights, the moon still looked round to me. I wasn't sure which one of those moons was the actual full moon. We walked around the temple first with Michael for explanations about the temple. In the distance we were able to hear the adzan calling the people for prayer. Situated in the east bank, the construction of the temple was started by Amenhotep III, continued and finished by the famous King Tut and Horemheb, and then added on to by Rameses II and finally by Alexander the Great. Unlike the other temples we had previously visited, this temple is not dedicated to a single cult/god. Instead, it is used as a place to rejuvenate kingship. May of the kings were said to have been coronated at this temple. ...

Japan Winter Holiday 2017 Part 7 - Otaru Sakaimachi

On our second day in Otaru after we had breakfast and ice cream , we continued walking to Sakaimachi. This shopping street is one of the busiest in the city and is where a lot of Otaru attraction is located. In front of one of the stores there, we saw this cute dog wearing a Minion outfit. Of course Miss Kiki jumped and squealed and asked if she could pet it. We asked permission from the owner to take a picture with it. Along the street they have rock statues in the shape of famous characters like Anpanman and Mickey Mouse. With Anpanman It was a very nice day, we were able to walk around and had fun without feeling cold even though there were a lot of ice and snow. Check out the platforms they set up on the hill. We think that it's to prevent snow slides... Most of the buildings there were old style,,,  Many shops sell fresh seafood and they would cook it for you by order. As we walked past a souvenir shop, we saw a poster for these snowball make...
