Taekwondo

Just before the end of last term, Miss Kiki had completed and passed her first taekwondo exam. Since we had a long holiday, today was the first day she wore her new belt and she was mighty proud.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, younger than Chinese Kungfu (wushu) and Japanese Karate. Having done Wushu myself, I personally prefer Wushu than Taekwondo. I feel that Wushu movements are more elegant and flowy compared to choppy Taekwondo. But... I'll take what I can get with reasonable efforts. ;)

I originally wanted her to take some form of martial arts to toughen her up a bit. I had noticed that whenever we were at the playground and there were older or bigger kids running around, she would be running to the side, scared to be bumped.

My theory was that if she is exposed to some physical training she would be more brave and not so scared. Well, she was really against it at first. I told her to please try just one class, and if she didn't like it I would not ask again. She agreed, only if her best friend A would join too. Lucky for me, A was excited to join too!

The first class went well, and she really liked it. About 15 boys in it and Miss Kiki and A were the only two girls. So she has been in Taekwondo class ever since.

Did it work? I think so! Miss Kiki has been more brave, more willing to try things, and she has so much fun. Here is a clip of her performance at the school concert this past June. Notice the white belt?

Here is her new yellow/white belt!

Heeeeeeeeyahh!

Nintendo Switch Sleeve Tutorial

Hi! I'm Kirana from woofkiki.blogspot.co.id . I am going to write an introduction for this blog post. We bought a Nintendo Switch in Japan.  I really liked it and played with it almost everyday. If you're wondering what a Nintendo Switch is, it is a video game where you can basically  "switch" everything. The joy-cons and even the game! You can also connect it to your TV. It would be nice to bring it around with you, but when you put it in your bag... Oh no! The screen scratched! So, this is a sleeve that will fix that. Let's get started!šŸ˜Š Kirana Now the tutorial (by Kirana's mom)... 1. Make your pattern according to the picture below. It is basically a 6"x24" rectangle with a semi circle at one end. Note: this is not a printable pattern 1. Cut your outer fabric, lining, and batting(optional). In this tutorial, I used minky for lining and a pre-quilted fabric for the cover, so I didn't need extra batting. For batting, I recomm...

World of Ghibli Exhibition Jakarta 2017

A few months back I received an email about World of Ghibli exhibition in Jakarta. My skeptical brain immediately thought, "Aah, how good could it be... I've visited the museum in Mitaka   and it's probably not going to be any better." Fast forward to August, a few of my Japan loving friends mentioned that rumours said that the displays are very good, made by Indonesians in cooperations with Ghibli representatives from Japan. In fact, so good that the Japanese company plans to take the displays and give them a home in Japan. Well hearing this from several different people definitely piqued my interest and I decided to check it out. It turned out that Miss Kiki and DH also wanted to go so I bought tickets from Traveloka  because they had a sale.  In the morning of our visit day, I asked Miss Kiki if she wanted to dress up as Kiki when she goes and she excitedly said yes. I made her a red bow headband with Cotton and Steel's Supreme Solid in Bandana  ...

Japan Trip June 2016 - Part 9 - Osaka

It was a super hot and bright morning and we were all packed and ready to ride the train to Osaka. We had no excuse to take a taxi so we walked to Kyoto Station... It was a rather short ride considering we moved cities, it was still around noon when we arrived at Osaka Station. The AirBnb property I had booked looked close to the station on the map, but it was further than expected. We were so sweaty by the time we got there, mostly because of our backpacks and our suitcases! I was very impressed Miss Kiki carried her backpack without complaints even though it was pretty stuffed by then. Taken from Osaka Station We had to change our wet and sticky clothes upon arrival, and after a bit of rest we decided to head out. First to Tenjimbashisuji Shopping Street listed on a tourist guide just over 1 km away. It was so hot and sunny I regretted not taking a hat for any of us. I was lucky I hadn't forgotten to bring my sunglasses. When we got there, we real...
