Miss Kiki Turned 6!

This year Miss Kiki's birthday was extra special. There were things about it unlike any other. To start, I for once started thinking and doing something about it ahead of time. In September when we were in Canada I searched for a good goodie bag for her birthday and at Superstore I found disney skipping ropes for the girls and crayola coloured bubble juice for the boys. Luckily we had plenty of baggage allowance.

In the past two years I've asked her to design her own cake. You can see the balloon themed and princess themed cake she designed in my other posts. This year, I kept it a surprise. For many months (almost a year!) she told me she wanted a Frozen themed birthday and I came across the perfect cake on display at Le Soho KemChick Pacific Place many months ago and made a mental note to myself. Below you can see the picture of her cake. It was a 22 cm diameter Lapis Surabaya at the bottom and a 10 cm diameter dummy on top. Miss Kiki was ecstatic!


Just like the previous years, we did a small celebration at her school, Montessori style. I brought a picture of each of her birthdays since she was born, and the teacher talked about each of the, in class. For every year, she gets to go around the "sun" holding a globe in her hand. After all, each year is a full trip around the sun.

After the 6th circle around the "sun", she got to blow the candle in the middle then we sang and blew the candle on the cake.












Then for the dinner celebration with family, she chose Marche, naturally. It is her current favourite restaurant since I introduced it to her on her birthday last year. It is important for me to teach her not to go overboard in owning or having things. Since she had a fancy cake at school, for the dinner cake we settled for an individual serving of fruit tart from Marche. She was just as happy with that. I am very proud of her.

For weeks prior to her birthday I've hinted to the whole family not to get her any more toys. And I am impressed that they all obliged... *happy*. Since they put so much effort into the presents it meant a lot for me and I think for Kiki too. She has a sensitive heart like that.  

The first one is from Opa (Grandpa). He was supposed to get fluffy slippers for her to wear at home. He walked all around Singapore to find one because he's never seen one in Jakarta, but was not successful there either. In the end he got her a fluffy bath robe with her name embroidered on it. Nice.


Up next was Tante Frieska (my youngest sister). She already took Miss Kiki to see Disney Live the week before, but thought it was pretty lame. So she got Miss Kiki an additional present in the form of a book collection. Tante Frieska always picks good books for her. Before it was Children's National Geography, then Discovery's Strange but True facts about animals, and this year it was more of the strange but true facts, but from National Geography, and not only about animals.

Then it was me and DH's turn. We got her a snorkel set for her to use for our Christmas vacation to Borneo...

Last but not least..... from Oma (Grandma). It is a very special book that Oma created herself for Miss Kiki. The first few pages were a collection of birthday greetings from her family and friends (yeah, she has adult friends too, mostly at Starbucks!) and it was meant to be continuously filled with stories of Oma and Kiki. It is a gift that goes on and on... Miss Kiki was so touched by this she almost cried. Did I mention she has a very soft heart?





She claimed that this was "The best birthday ever!" 

** My other sister unfortunately had to go back to Richmond a few days before Miss Kiki's birthday, but she got her a mini sofa bed perfect for her size. Very cute!

Motykas in Asia 2016 Part 7 - West Java

One day after we arrived in Jakarta from Phuket, we went on a road trip to Bandung, West Java. We were on a roll! Hahaha. Our first destination was the White Crater, a beautiful place located in Ciwidey, outside Bandung.  We left our home at around 7 am and arrived at the crater at almost noon. It was a loooong drive. Nonetheless, the view was breathtaking. It was a bit chilly up there, even the Winnipegers pulled out their jackets. :D The crater was pale green with strong sulphur smell, they recommend a maximum of 15 minutes at the bottom. Around the crater were serene looking tree barks with little or no leaves. During a certain time of the day, there would usually be fog coming down over the crater but we didn't get to see it. Spring in Egypt Part 9 - Luxor Temple

At the time when we arrived at Luxor temple it was already after dusk and it became a little difficult to take photos. I compensated by setting my camera ISO to 4000 to make tripod-less picture-taking possible even though the grains became more visible. Just like the previous nights, the moon still looked round to me. I wasn't sure which one of those moons was the actual full moon. We walked around the temple first with Michael for explanations about the temple. In the distance we were able to hear the adzan calling the people for prayer. Situated in the east bank, the construction of the temple was started by Amenhotep III, continued and finished by the famous King Tut and Horemheb, and then added on to by Rameses II and finally by Alexander the Great. Unlike the other temples we had previously visited, this temple is not dedicated to a single cult/god. Instead, it is used as a place to rejuvenate kingship. May of the kings were said to have been coronated at this temple. ...
