Weekend in Palembang April 2016

Close to the end of April I had the opportunity to work in Palembang for a day. It was the best kind of assignment as I got to travel for 2 days and worked for a day. We arrived at the airport in the morning and was picked up by someone from work. It was great! In Palembang we stayed at Novotel Resort and Hotel. It looked really nice on the outside, large lobby, large pool area. The concept was similar to the Novotel in Manado... the quality was also about the same. Good on the outside, but not on the inside. Our room was not so clean, neither was the bathroom. And to top that off, once in a while we could smell cigarette smoke coming in from somewhere outside.

Not wanting to waste any time, we right away headed to Bakmi Aloi. Apparently this is the original location and the parents of the Jakarta's Bakmi Aloy's owners run it.

From there we went straight to Pempek Dempo nearby. These I didn't fancy too much.

There aren't too many things to see in Palembang, but many different food to try. So we went to the mall and then went for lunch. This is fish pindang.

We went to Starbucks to buy the city tumblers. Palembang had one of the nicest ones I've seen in Indonesia. It was actually the stainless steel DIY tumbler with the Palembang design inserted in it. I don't like plastic tumblers so this is a nice find. Check out the Songket decorated walls inside Starbucks!

We went shopping in a market and I got myself some blongket fabrics.

We also went to a restaurant famous for their Ampera Bridge view. Food was so so but not bad.

The ampera bridge actually had a very interesting history but not many people knew about it. You can read it here.

During the trip I tried several more Pempek that I liked better than the first one. That was also a difficult time as that was when my late cousin had collapsed and was admitted to the ICU just a few days before he passed. May he rest in peace...

Nintendo Switch Sleeve Tutorial

Hi! I'm Kirana from woofkiki.blogspot.co.id . I am going to write an introduction for this blog post. We bought a Nintendo Switch in Japan.  I really liked it and played with it almost everyday. If you're wondering what a Nintendo Switch is, it is a video game where you can basically  "switch" everything. The joy-cons and even the game! You can also connect it to your TV. It would be nice to bring it around with you, but when you put it in your bag... Oh no! The screen scratched! So, this is a sleeve that will fix that. Let's get started!😊 Kirana Now the tutorial (by Kirana's mom)... 1. Make your pattern according to the picture below. It is basically a 6"x24" rectangle with a semi circle at one end. Note: this is not a printable pattern 1. Cut your outer fabric, lining, and batting(optional). In this tutorial, I used minky for lining and a pre-quilted fabric for the cover, so I didn't need extra batting. For batting, I recomm...

Japan Spring 2024 - Part 5 Himeji Kimono Experience

All these times that we've been to Japan, we've never had a kimono experience. This time, however, since Miss Kiki was also willing, we made the appointment and did it! I chose to have it in Himeji because at the time this was planned, the Sakura forecast said that we would catch the full bloom when we were in Himeji. Alas, it got delayed by about a week! Anyhow, the experience had been booked and we went with it anyway.

Japan Trip June 2016 - Part 9 - Osaka

It was a super hot and bright morning and we were all packed and ready to ride the train to Osaka. We had no excuse to take a taxi so we walked to Kyoto Station... It was a rather short ride considering we moved cities, it was still around noon when we arrived at Osaka Station. The AirBnb property I had booked looked close to the station on the map, but it was further than expected. We were so sweaty by the time we got there, mostly because of our backpacks and our suitcases! I was very impressed Miss Kiki carried her backpack without complaints even though it was pretty stuffed by then. Taken from Osaka Station We had to change our wet and sticky clothes upon arrival, and after a bit of rest we decided to head out. First to Tenjimbashisuji Shopping Street listed on a tourist guide just over 1 km away. It was so hot and sunny I regretted not taking a hat for any of us. I was lucky I hadn't forgotten to bring my sunglasses. When we got there, we real...
