This is part 2 of "A Week in Melbourne" post series. If you missed it, here's Part 1.
After breakfast we took the tram to get to the car rental office. The tram within the city circle was completely free of charge.
For the second day, I planned a trip to the Phillip Island. I pre-booked a rental car from Redspot through a site called Vroom vroom vroom. It's a site that compares different car rental companies to give you the best rate. I've used it before when we went to Perth.
That morning, we got up early and walked to Operator25 for breakfast. We had toast and smoked salmon and eggs. It was good in general except for the extra dry and hard toast. Coffee was also good.

So we got our car no problem, complete with a dubious car seat... Off we went to the Phillip Island!
The drive was almost 2 hours long, and Miss Kiki fell asleep in the car. It was another gloomy day with rain clouds looming in the sky.
I had pre-purchased a 3 Park Pass for family the day before, and had the ticket printed at the Radisson's office service. Our first destination was the Koala Conservation Centre. It was educational, but most of the time we were only able to see koala butts up high on the tree.
By the time we finished it was already lunch time so we drove to the Nobbies Centre and shared a big plate of fish and chips. The Nobbies is a nice area with ocean view.
Our lunch took longer than expected, so afterwards we rushed over to the Churchill Island to catch their shows. We made it just in time to see the whip-cracking show followed by working dogs show and sheep shearing show. The shows were pretty good, but compared to the shows in Caversham Wildlife Park in Perth it was not as entertaining.
We were done at the Churchill Island and it was the perfect time to head to the Penguin Parade. The Penguins Parade is THE main attraction at the Phillip Island, I would say. It is a place where you can see penguins come home from the sea to walk to their burrows. Did you know that a penguin takes the same path to their burrows all their life? We got a very good seat for the parade at first, but then it started raining, and it was blowing wind, and it was just so cold! We went back inside and DH got us rain ponchos. We only have pictures of us waiting for the penguins but as soon as it got darker no photography or videos are allowed.
It was already dark when the penguin parade finished, so we headed back to the city. Based on a friend's recommendation we stopped at Kanpai Japanese Restaurant in South Yarra for dinner. Their specialty is teppanyaki with garlic cream sauce. DH was very skeptical at first but he ended up really liking it.
We needed to prepare for our breakfast for the following day, so we went to a 24-hour Woolsworth just a couple blocks away and grabbed sandwiches there. That was the end of our second day! Coming next: Mt. Baw Baw trip
