One thing about weddings that is a big part but often left out until the last minute is of course.... the first dance. Most girls dream about their first dance and most guys are just absolutely nervous about it and some even dread the idea.
I want to share some tips for brides and grooms to-be out there on how to make your first dance more memorable. Here they are!
Choosing A song
Choosing a song for your first dance can be overwhelming, but it does not have to be that way. Here we will talk about some things to consider when you choose yours. Your song and dance should be one that reflects both of your personalities and relationship.
Are you traditional, funny, energetic, unique, or romantic?
What do you want to show your guests? Do you have a story to share?
Did you have a song that was playing on your first date? Or maybe a song that tells a story about you? It is always good to choose two songs or more just in case one doesn’t quite work out.
About the song
Since you will be dancing to this song, you want to have a song with a nice beat to it, one where you can hear the counts easily. Drum or bass beats are usually a good cue. The length of the song should be approximately 2:30 or 3:30 minutes. It should not exceed 4 minutes because then it gets lengthy.
The Dance
After choosing a song, you need to decide whether you would like to do a choreographed piece, or simply do a freestyle dance. Do you want some acting in it, or simply dancing? Keep in mind the dress that you will be wearing. You can’t do a lot of fast turns if you plan to wear a 10 lbs. dress on your wedding! Listen to the song and decide what dance you would like to do. A 3⁄4 song would be a waltz, while a 4/4 song could be a lot of other dance types.
Rehearsals
Regardless of whether you decide to do a choreography or not, it is always best to rehearse the dance as far in advance as possible before the wedding. That way you won’t freeze when you are nervous on the wedding day. And trust me..., you will be nervous! Don’t forget to try the dance with the shoes that you will be wearing for the dance, and rehearse one last time the day before the wedding or right before the reception starts.
Last But Not Least
Relax and Smile!
