On Good Friday of 2023, we went from Taman Simalem Resort to Sibea-Bea Hill, and then continued by land to Samosir Island. This is not a common nor well known route to reach Samosir Island, but there is a way to get to Samosir Island from the mainland without a ferry. Samosir Island is the largest island within an island and is the homeland to Batak people. At 630 km2, it is almost as big as Singapore!
A friend who is a local recommended the Samosir Cottages Resort, stating that this was the only one he could recommend. Even so, we were rather disappointed. It was a huge, overpacked resort, not particularly the cleanest, and the breakfast spread was simply bad. That being said, I don't know a better alternative. I think the accommodation sector on the island could use a lot of improvements. The most memorable of the resort for me was the tight and narrow parking lot that was under renovations at that time that really tested my driving skills.
The next morning we checked out right after breakfast and immediately made our way to Medan. This time we went to the pier and took a ferry to the mainland. In case you're wondering, yes, we drove the car on to the ferry and crossed the lake.
So we drove towards Medan with a stop at Pematang Siantar for lunch. I was quite excited about this stop because one of my favorite types of noodles is P. Siantar-style curly noodles and to have it in the original city is pretty exciting! The most famous restaurant in P. Siantar for noodles is Bakmi Awai, so that's where we went. It didn't disappoint!
Full as we were from the noodles, we decided to try another legendary spot: Kedai Kopi Sedap. Despite not being hungry, the burnt coffee smell, the sweetness of the condensed milk, and the subtle flavours of Kaya jam didn't fail our tastebuds. Highly recommended!
It is worth mentioning that just around the block from KK Sedap, there is a store called Toko Paten where you can buy snacks for souvenirs. There are sesame snaps, peanut snaps, and others. We bought some to take home and they were pretty good!
Up next: Medan!
