It was actually a blessing in disguise that I mistakenly booked the wrong hotel and ended up staying in Shantang area. After we checked in at Scholar's Hotel Shantang, we warmed ourselves up with some tea and then headed out to the street right in front of the hotel to find something to eat. We walked and walked, and even though there were many stores selling snacks and small cafes, we couldn't make a decision and ended up in KFC! Hahaha.... But then, even in KFC there we tried something special... I ordered a special sandwich with crawfish inside... it was quite good!
Shantang Street was more of a tourist area but it was very pretty with all the red lanterns hanging and lit up. There were souvenir shops, yogurt and alcohol shops, candy shops, and many more... To my surprise, shopping in China so far has been quite comfortable, no one was haggling, hassling, touting, nor chasing you. I felt comfortable browsing slowly and leaving when nothing interested me.
I didn't have the camera with me that evening and my phone was dead. So these pictures below were whatever I could gather from everyone else's phones and iPad.
After our dinner MM and Miss Kiki went back to the hotel and I went with the boys to roam around some more. We went to the bridge that was the entrance to Shantang Street and took some pictures...
Before going back to the hotel, I decided to try the giant xiao long bao they were selling on the street. It was not that great and totally a rip off at RMB 20!
On the other hand, we went back to this store we passed earlier to buy some sesame snaps. They were freshly made at the store and it smelled and looked really good when we walked past. I picked three different combinations, the three boxes cost RMB 50 in total and they were delicious!! I couldn't find this brand anywhere else for the rest of our trip, I regretted only buying 3....
We finally went back to the hotel and rested for the evening. We needed the rest because we had planned to take a train to Hangzhou in the morning after breakfast. Our plan didn't go so well, but you've probably read it in my post.
Please stay tuned for pictures of Hangzhou!
