Making tutus for babies and tots is surprisingly easy, but tedious. The good news is, it's a lot cheaper to make it yourself unless you get a really good deal when you buy one, and you can almost multi-task when making it.
In this tutorial, I will explain how to make an adjustable tutu and a fixed one.
What you need:
In this tutorial, I will explain how to make an adjustable tutu and a fixed one.
Miss Kiki all danced out |
- Spools of 6" wide tulle (1 or 2 of 25 yard would be enough, depending on how fluffy you want it)
- Elastic measuring the wearer's waist minus 3".
- Ribbon (for adjustable tutus)
- Decorations like flowers, beads, rhinestones, ribbons (optional).
- Decide how long you want your tutu to be, multiply by 2 and add 1/2". For example, if you want the tutu to be 7" long, then 7" x 2 + 0.5" = 14.5". Lets call this "x".
- Cut your tulle into many strips of x length. In my case 14.5" long.
- Cut your ribbon to get two 20" long strips.
- Sew a strip on each end of your elastic.
- Take a strip of tulle and tie it into a knot around the elastic, making sure that the knot is in the middle of the tulle (both ends have the same length).
- Repeat step 3 with the rest of the tulle, making sure that all the knots are facing the same side and that the elastic is not twisted.
- Keep adding tulle until you get the desired fullness.
- Embellish with decorations (optional). You can either sew it on or glue it on, but make sure they are all secure so it doesn't pose a choking hazard.
- Put it on the lucky girl! The ribbon ties into a bow and you can adjust the size by re-doing the bow.
- Sew both ends of your elastic to make a full circle.
- Take a strip of tulle and tie it into a knot around the elastic, making sure that the knot is in the middle of the tulle (both ends have the same length).
- Repeat step 2 with the rest of the tulle, making sure that all the knots are facing the same side and that the elastic is not twisted.
- Keep adding tulle until you get the desired fullness.
- Embellish with decorations (optional). You can either sew it on or glue it on, but make sure they are all secure so it doesn't pose a choking hazard.
- Voila! Your tutu is done.
