Loopy pom-pom hair bow

It has been a while since I posted a tutorial. This post I am going to show you how to make these cute loopy pom-pom hair bows. One of Miss Kiki's friends wore one to school a few days ago and I thought it was very cute.  You can make them in different sizes, but the ones I made here I used the 1 cm width grosgrain ribbon. Pictured above is the medium sized pompom, with a diameter of 3". What you need for the pompom: 21 pieces of 3" strips ribbon. I had 3 different styles I want to combine so I cut 7 pieces each. You can add more or less pieces depending on how full you want your pom-pom. needle and thread, knotted at the end. a small piece of felt, about 1" diameter glue Pieces of ribbon The How To: Take a piece of ribbon, fold in half, and put needle and thread through the ends. Repeat with the rest of the pieces. Here I alternated the colours but you can do whatever pattern you want. When finished, tie the ends of the thread toget

Maple Sugar Cookie with Maple Icing

In my post about the United Nations Day  celebration at Miss Kiki's school, I mentioned that we made Maple cookies to the potluck. I've never made it before but decided to trust the internet and picked a recipe. I chose the Maple Sugar Cookies recipe from Taste of Home . As usual, I made some substitute and here are what I used: 1 cup margarine 1-1/4 cups sugar 2 eggs 1/4 cup pure Canadian maple syrup 3 teaspoons home-made vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups cookie/pastry flour 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt Then I followed the directions on the original recipe . After baking them, I decided that the vanilla flavour was too strong I could not taste the maple at all. So I made maple cookie glaze. 1 cup icing sugar 3 tbsp pure canadian maple syrup 1 tbsp water I did find however, the icing was too runny. So next time I will try omitting the water and see how it goes.

Baked Crispy Chicken Fingers

A few posts ago, I mentioned that my friend MG made us chicken fingers for one of the dish for dinner.  It was baked, not fried, with no additional oil. And it was very good!! I recently asked her for the recipe and she gave me a link to this recipe  from Laaloosh  but stating that she used corn flakes instead of the Fiber One cereal. When I tried making my chicken fingers last night, I changed the recipe up a bit. The chicken I used was not the usual chicken breast but I only used the chicken inner fillet - also called chicken tenders  (the small part of the breast that is attached to the soft breast bone). See diagram below. And here is what I used: chicken tenders (about a dozen pcs) 1 free range egg, beaten. I used the whole egg, not just the white. 1 cup corn flakes, in plastic bag, crushed using rolling pin. Just roll over it. 2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp salt dash of white pepper powder The How To: Preheat your oven to 220 C Mix the last 4 ingredi

Taekwondo

Just before the end of last term, Miss Kiki had completed and passed her first taekwondo exam. Since we had a long holiday, today was the first day she wore her new belt and she was mighty proud. Taekwondo  is a Korean martial art, younger than Chinese Kungfu (wushu) and Japanese Karate . Having done Wushu myself, I personally prefer Wushu than Taekwondo. I feel that Wushu movements are more elegant and flowy compared to choppy Taekwondo. But... I'll take what I can get with reasonable efforts. ;) I originally wanted her to take some form of martial arts to toughen her up a bit. I had noticed that whenever we were at the playground and there were older or bigger kids running around, she would be running to the side, scared to be bumped. My theory was that if she is exposed to some physical training she would be more brave and not so scared. Well, she was really against it at first. I told her to please try just one class, and if she didn't like it I would not ask

United Nations Day 2014

The United Nations Day is observed on October 24th each year. This marks the anniversary of the   Charter of The United Nations . According to the article in Wikipedia, International schools around the world celebrate this day every year though not necessarily right on the date. Miss Kiki's school celebrated it today. The kids were all dressed up in costumes from all around Indonesia and the world. Last week I had suggested to Miss Kiki that she could wear her new Winnipeg Jets T-Shirt and jeans with her new Canada Olympic Hoodie and represent Canada. She reluctantly agreed, but was very relieved that I offered to rent her an Indonesian costume instead. On Sunday we went to a rental company called UD Sinar Jaya in West Jakarta and I told her she could pick any one she wanted. Then she chose the sparkliest, brightest costume there was: The Balinese costume. So today we got ready and I took her to school in full costume. When we got to school, the parking was a
